The rupee is near 96 to the dollar. Should you worry?

News reports say the rupee is near 96 to a dollar this week. That is the exchange rate. It tells you how many rupees one dollar costs.

Dhvani
but my jacket did not change. the rupee did?? that feels so unfair 🥺

Tanishq
you are both right?? please say you are both right
9:13
Nemi
Both can be right. Some things are priced in dollars. When a dollar costs more rupees, the rupee price goes up too.
9:14
Tanishq
ok but why should my phone, my college fee and my US fund care?

Nemi
That is the real question. The rupee is near 96 to a dollar. Why does your phone, your college fee and your US fund care?

Step 2 of 7 · Guess
Guess first
Exchange rate means how many rupees one dollar costs. If it is 96, one dollar costs ₹96.
News reports call the rupee "weak" when it slips against the dollar. What does a weak rupee mean?
Yes. A weak rupee means one dollar costs more rupees. Say it was ₹85 once. Now it is near ₹96.
Step 3 of 7 · Build
What does a phone cost when the rate moves?
Try your own numbers. Type a price in dollars, then tap a rate. The prices and rates here are made up for maths.
Rupees per dollar…
Price in rupees
Same item at ₹85
Extra you pay
A $1,000 phone costs ₹96,000 at a rate of 96. At 85 it was ₹85,000. That is ₹11,000 extra for the same phone.
Made up numbers. Real prices also include taxes and the shop's own margin.
Step 4 of 7 · Concept
Strong rupee, or weak rupee?
Import means something India buys from another country, like crude oil or phones. Export means something India sells to another country.
A strong rupee means one dollar costs fewer rupees. A weak rupee means one dollar costs more rupees. Tap to compare.
One dollar costs fewer rupees
Example
Say the rate is ₹85 for a dollar.
Travellers
A $500 trip costs ₹42,500. Cheaper for you.
Importers
Firms buying from abroad pay fewer rupees for the same goods.
Students abroad
Their dollar fee needs fewer rupees.
Exporters
Firms selling abroad get fewer rupees for each dollar they earn.
One dollar costs more rupees
Example
Say the rate is near ₹96 for a dollar.
Travellers
The same $500 trip costs ₹48,000. That is ₹5,500 more.
Importers
Firms buying from abroad pay more rupees for the same goods.
Students abroad
Their dollar fee needs more rupees.
Exporters
Firms selling abroad get more rupees for each dollar they earn.
Why is it weak now? News reports say economists blame costly crude oil and a stronger US dollar.
Trade deficit means India buys more from the world than it sells to it. News reports say the August gap narrowed to $26.9 billion, against about $32.2 billion expected. That helped the rupee steady. The RBI also used dollar buying and selling and other tools to manage the rupee, instead of raising its rate.
Step 5 of 7 · Why it matters
The same bill, at different rates
Here is a $1,000 item and a $20,000 yearly college fee abroad. Tap a rate. These are made up scenarios for maths, not a prediction.
Rupees per dollar…
$1,000 item costs
Extra on the item
Extra on the $20,000 fee
Yearly fee at ₹85₹17,00,000
Yearly fee at the rate you picked₹17,00,000
At ₹85, this is the base. Tap a higher rate and watch the gold bar pull ahead of the grey one.
Step 6 of 7 · Before and after
Who pays more, who gains?
The same rate moves two people in opposite ways. Tap to see each side.
The rate goes from 85 to 96
The bill
A $20,000 yearly fee abroad. Made up numbers.
At ₹85
₹17,00,000
At ₹96
₹19,20,000
The phone
A $1,000 phone goes from ₹85,000 to ₹96,000.
Result
Same dollars, but ₹2,20,000 more for the fee. Whoever pays in dollars feels a weak rupee.
The rate goes from 85 to 96
The holding
A US fund is a fund that holds US assets, and those are priced in dollars. Say your holding is worth $100. Made up numbers.
At ₹85
₹8,500
At ₹96
₹9,600
The pay
A freelancer paid $500 gets ₹42,500 at 85, and ₹48,000 at 96.
Result
Same dollars, but ₹1,100 more on that $100 when you count it in rupees. News reports say US focused funds were among this week's top gainers, and a weak rupee adds to that gain.
This only counts the exchange rate. The fund's own dollar price can also fall. Nobody can promise where the rupee or a fund goes next.
Step 7 of 7 · Answer
Last one. A fee is fixed at $20,000. The rate moves from ₹90 to ₹96. What happens?
Yes. $20,000 times 6 extra rupees per dollar is ₹1,20,000.
Same dollars, more rupees. That is what a weak rupee does.It hurts if you pay in dollars. It helps if you hold dollars.

Why ₹100 buys less than it did last year.
IAMB explains money basics. This is not advice to buy, sell, travel or invest in anything, and it does not predict the rupee. The prices, rates, fees and fund values here are made up so the maths stays simple. Real rates change every day.
